Marv Kay Stadium

Marv Kay, during the proclamation of Marv Kay Day in 2019.
Alumni Field at Marv Kay Stadium and the Harold M. and Patricia M. Korell Athletics Center combine to provide Colorado School of Mines football one of the best and most modern homes in NCAA Division II. Opened in 2015 on the site of historic Alumni Field, the stadium seats more than 4,000 fans and houses locker rooms, a weight room and equipment room, football offices and meeting spaces, as well as a press row.
The stadium is named for Marv Kay, who is also the namesake for Oredigger mascot Marvin the Miner. The legendary Oredigger football coach and athletics director was practically born on campus. His father was a junior at the time, and they lived across the street from the President’s House. Growing up playing sports among the mining towns on Colorado’s Western Slope, the man who would devote most of his life to Colorado School of Mines never saw himself headed anywhere else. Marv Kay graduated from Mines in 1963 and went on to be drafted by the Denver Broncos before returning as the head football coach of Mines for 24 years and athletic director for nine years. During that time, Kay served as mayor of Golden for eight years and sat on Golden’s city council for 12 years.
You can read more about the legendary Marv Kay in the Fall 2008 edition of Mines Magazine.
